Sobre los proyectos<\/strong><\/p>

Al llegar a la Residencia Paulo estuvo trabajando en Taller con \u201cApuntes de \u00c1frica\u201d del proyecto \u201cCuadernos de \u00c1frica\u201d realizando una edici\u00f3n de grabados. Desarroll\u00f3 tambi\u00e9n dos performance en Zona Imaginaria, \u201cMalvenido\u201d y \u201cWhat is the colour of my skin?\u201d con la participaci\u00f3n del artista cubano, Carlos Martiel.<\/p>

La primer visita de Paulo fue durante en el mes de Octubre 2010, un mes muy intenso en el pa\u00eds y en Buenos Aires. En esos d\u00edas se respiraba un clima muy especial. El 27 de Octubre se realiz\u00f3 el Censo Nacional. Tocaron el timbre en la casa y sorprendi\u00f3 a\u00a0Paulo viviendo en esta casa.<\/em>\u00a0Paulo fue censado. Inmediatamente prendi\u00f3 su grabador y las preguntas comenzaron:<\/span>\u00a0es usted afrodescendiente?,\u00a0si<\/em>… es descendientes de pueblos originarios?,\u00a0si<\/em>\u2026 tiene descendencia europea?\u00a0si<\/em>,… como si hubiese planeado una performance qued\u00f3 asentado en los registros nacionales. El mismo d\u00eda la muerte del ex presidente de la Naci\u00f3n, N\u00e9stor Kirchner, provoc\u00f3 conmoci\u00f3n en ambientes pol\u00edticos, econ\u00f3micos y sociales. La plaza de Mayo se lleno de gente durante d\u00edas y Paulo tambi\u00e9n estuvo all\u00ed presente.<\/p>

La segunda visita fue en Abril de 2011. Paulo me escribi\u00f3 cont\u00e1ndome que hab\u00eda ganado una beca de dos meses para ir hacer una residencia a Nueva York. El viaje era ya parte del proyecto y comenz\u00f3, desde Brasil hacia el sur, en lugar de hacia al norte. Primero recorrer\u00eda Am\u00e9rica en casi toda su extensi\u00f3n como si su cuerpo fuese un cray\u00f3n que va dibujando ese recorrido y va llevando en s\u00ed mismo un acervo de experiencias hasta llegar a Estados Unidos, Am\u00e9rica del Norte. Me expres\u00f3 su inter\u00e9s en encontrarse con los\u00a0\u201c<\/span>Pueblos Originarios\u201d y conseguir una cabeza de vaca reci\u00e9n cortada para hacer una performance: \u201ctengo una imagen que quiero hacer, en Plaza de Mayo, simple como eso.\u201d<\/p>

Paulo<\/strong> lleg\u00f3 un s\u00e1bado temprano por la ma\u00f1ana, lo recuerdo bien porque yo estaba cursando un taller en San Telmo y planeamos ir juntos a capital. En la Avenida 9 de Julio, pleno centro porte\u00f1o a metros del obelisco, estaban asentados desde hac\u00eda d\u00edas carpas con Pueblos Originarios reclamando por sus tierras. Paulo fue recibido y reconocido como uno de ellos y se quedo a pasar la noche. Al d\u00eda siguiente nos trajeron la cabeza de vaca al taller, llegaron Aidana e Ignacio, amigos artistas que acompa\u00f1amos a la performance rumbo a capital. Paulo recorri\u00f3 la plaza de Mayo y la Casa Rosada, con la cabeza de vaca sobre su cabeza, en el camino su camisa amarilla se iba ti\u00f1endo de un hilo rojo intenso a sangre fresca. El olor era muy pregnante. La polic\u00eda le preguntaba que estaba haciendo all\u00ed. No sab\u00edan muy bien como reaccionar. El solo respond\u00eda: \u201ccaminando con una cabeza de vaca\u201d. Este recorrido termin\u00f3 en la carpa de los Pueblos Originarios donde Paulo faeno la cabeza, la cocinaron.<\/p>

Las visitas de Paulo<\/strong> fueron breves, pero de mucha intensidad. En el Taller realiz\u00f3 una edici\u00f3n de fotograbado, particip\u00f3 del Taller de los chicos del barrio y les ense\u00f1o a hacer t\u00edteres de papel, intervino la biblioteca de la casa con sus escritos y se integro con la comunidad barrial. Los vecinos lo invitaron a comer una asado con vino, que cambi\u00f3 por verduras a la parrilla y jugo de frutas para sorpresa de todos: Paulo es vegetariano.<\/p>

El taller de M\u00e1scaras P.A.<\/strong><\/p>

Dentro del programa del taller de Los Pequen\u0303os Aprendices, Paulo Nazareth dicto\u0301 un taller de ma\u0301scaras.
La ma\u0301scara es el objeto de la negacio\u0301n de la identidad, del sentido u\u0301nico y de la coincidencia consigo mismo, es la expresio\u0301n de la metamorfosis, de la violacio\u0301n de las fronteras naturales, de la ridiculizacio\u0301n, de los sobrenombres, y establece la relacio\u0301n entre la realidad y la imagen individual. El complejo simbo\u0301lico es inagotable.<\/p>

La creacio\u0301n de ma\u0301scaras sin apariencia emocional, incluso sin identificacio\u0301n de edad, de raza o de ge\u0301nero, provoca una atmo\u0301sfera de suspensio\u0301n y de reflexio\u0301n existencial sobre esos cuerpos. Su tono iro\u0301nico y paro\u0301dico reconfigura problemas cercanos, diferencias sociales y culturales que nos revelan una realidad cada vez ma\u0301s latente.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

About the projects<\/strong><\/p>

Paulo Nazareth\u2019s second visit was in April of 2011. He wrote to me, telling me that he had been awarded a grant to do a two month residency in New York and the trip was part of the project, but it began by him heading South instead of North. First, he toured through the Americas in almost its entire length, as if his body was a crayon tracing the route, bringing an archive of experiences along with it until reach- ing the United States. He expressed an interest in meeting with members of the Pueblos Originarios [Native people] and finding a recently severed cow\u2019s head to use in a per- formance. I still remember his exact words: \u2018I have an image I want to make, in Plaza de Mayo, simple as that\u2019.<\/span><\/p>

Paulo Nazareth arrived a Saturday early in the morning. We planned on heading downtown Buenos Aires together. Along 9 de Julio Avenue, right in the center of the city and just a few meters away from the obelisk, a tent had been set up and occupied by members of the Pueblos Originarios for the past several days to further their claim to their land. Paulo was received and recognized as one of them and he spent the night there. The following day, they brought the cow head to the studio. Aidana Mari\u0301a Rico Cha\u0301vez and Ignacio Amespil, friends of Paulo\u2019s, also arrived, and they would accompany the performance in Plaza de Mayo.<\/span><\/p>

Paulo walked all around the Plaza with the cow head on his head. As he did so, his yellow shirt was stained with an intense red thread of fresh cow blood. We were accompa- nied by a very pungent odor. The police, clearly uncomfort- able, asked him what he was doing. Paulo responded: \u2018I\u2019m walking with a cow head\u2019.<\/span><\/p>

Mask Workshop<\/strong><\/p>

Within the framework of Los Pequen\u0303os Aprendices program, Paulo Nazareth gave a mask workshop.<\/span><\/p>

Masks are objects that negate identity, a unique meaning and its coincidence with one\u2019s self; they are an expression of metamorphosis, violating natural boundaries, ridicule and nicknames and they establish a relationship between reality and the image of the individual. Its symbolic complexity is inexhaustible. The creation of masks that do not appear to be emotional and even lack an identifiable age, race or gender provoke an atmosphere of suspension and existential reflection regarding these bodies. Their tone of irony and parody reconfigures issues that are close to us, social and cultural differences that show us an increasingly latent reality.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
